Guest Presentation: Operation Green Team Contact: Brian Walker
Office Phone Number: 532-5326 (53-CLEAN)
Operation Green Team is a city agency under the Mayor’s office. They are an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful program. Operation Green Team will do any of the following activities:
Beautify public areas by planting flowers, fixing fences, pressure washing picnic areas, etc.
Provide supplies for “Adopt a Spot” volunteers, including trashbags, can catchers, etc.
Organize a Community Clean-up Day, which includes litter pick-up, collection of hazardous waste materials and other trash that you can’t normally put in your Garbage, removal of tree limbs that are safety concerns, etc.
Help elderly and disabled citizens haul broken tree limbs and yard refuse to the street
Investigate and remove illegal dumping
Provide environmental education to schools and organizations
Run “Great American Clean-up” campaign (March-May) to bring attention to stopping litter
If we set a date for the community clean up, Operation Green Team will make flyers and provide supplies and snacks. Brian stressed that you can call their department about any environmental concerns in the area. Even if your concern doesn’t fall under their authority, they will get you in contact with someone in the right department.
Tips from the Officers: What To Do If You Get Pulled Over
Officer Hollingsworth emphasized that if they are looking for a suspect for a recent crime, they are likely to pull over any vehicle that fits the description/profile. If you didn’t do it, you don’t have anything to worry about! Just stay calm and follow the officer’s instructions.
DO: Keep your hands on the steering wheel. Wait for the officer to make contact. Let the officer tell you what to do.
DO NOT: Reach for your wallet or cell phone. The officer may think you are reaching for a weapon.
DO: TELL the officer if you have any weapons in the vehicle.
DO NOT: Look for a license or registration in a glove box or bag where there is a weapon. The officer may think you are reaching for the weapon.
Last, if you don’t have a government ID on you, you will be put in a squad car until you are identified. Remember, any time you get stopped, a good attitude will always help you!!
What’s Next
We need to improve attendance at these meetings. The officers believe that we need 40% involvement of the residents to understand and address all major community concerns. Bring a neighbor (or two) to the next meeting!
We will be forming committees to gather information about priorities for our community (examples: Street Lighting, Inoperable Vehicles, Abandoned Houses, Unlicensed Businesses, etc.). If you can help on a committee, call Kimberly Cockrell at 426-4079 (before 9:00PM, please).
